Bringing Your Focus Back to the Things You Can “Control” + 6 Ways to Work Make it Happen

healing journey May 19, 2023

Are you a control-a-holic? Do you leave social settings worrying about others thoughts and feelings? Do you fear  the things that “could” happen in the future? Or spend your energy dwelling on past circumstances?

While there are aspects of life beyond your control, your mindset and actions are always within your sphere of influence. By redirecting your attention to what you can control, you empower yourself to make a positive impact on your life and the situations you encounter.

Bringing your focus back to the things you can control is an essential mindset shift that empowers you to take charge of your life and effectively navigate challenges.

Here's what it means:

  1. Accepting the limitations: Recognize that there are aspects of life beyond your control, such as external events, other people's actions, or unexpected circumstances. Accepting these limitations frees up mental and emotional energy that can be better directed towards what you can influence.
  2. Identifying your sphere of control: Direct your attention to the areas where you have control or influence. This includes your thoughts, emotions, attitudes, actions, and choices. By focusing on these elements, you can make intentional decisions and take steps towards positive outcomes.
  3. Shifting your perspective: Instead of dwelling on what you can't control, consciously shift your perspective to what you can control. This helps you regain a sense of agency and empowers you to find solutions and make progress. Remember that your response to a situation is within your control, even if the situation itself is not.
  4. Setting meaningful goals: Identify meaningful goals that align with your values and aspirations. These goals should be within your sphere of control. By setting clear objectives, you can direct your efforts towards achievable outcomes and maintain a sense of progress and accomplishment.
  5. Taking proactive action: Once you've identified the controllable aspects, take proactive steps to influence the situation in a positive way. This might involve problem-solving, seeking support or information, honing your skills, or adjusting your approach. By focusing on what you can control, you can actively shape your circumstances and work towards desired outcomes.
  6. Practicing self-care: Directing your focus towards what you can control also means taking care of yourself. Prioritize self-care activities that enhance your physical and mental well-being. This includes practices such as exercise, mindfulness, healthy relationships, and self-reflection. Taking care of yourself strengthens your ability to handle challenges and make effective decisions.

Remember, the goal of focusing on what you can control is not to ignore or avoid external circumstances but to empower yourself to respond in ways that align with your values and goals. By shifting your focus and energy towards what you can control, you cultivate a proactive mindset, reduce stress, and increase your ability to navigate life's challenges with resilience and determination.
